A Cold Front presently across the extreme Northwest Bahamas will continue to quickly push southeastwards through the archipelago Tuesday and stall and weaken across the SE Bahamas by Wednesday. Expect showers and possible thunderstorm activity with the passage of the front. A strong Ridge of High Pressure will then build across the islands behind the front generating breezy to windy conditions and ushering a cooler and drier airmass through Thursday. A slight warm up is expected into the weekend before a second Front moves into the islands on Sunday with another breezy period and cool down expected.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

A gale-force, non-tropical low pressure system is centered between

the Madeira Islands and the Azores. This system has become less

organized during the past 24 hours, and environmental conditions are

expected to become less conducive for development as the system

moves southwestward during the next day or two. Although

subtropical development is now unlikely, this system will continue

to produce strong winds and locally heavy rains in the Madeira

Islands and the Azores through Wednesday. Additional information on

this system can be found in High Seas Forecasts issued by Meteo

France.

A gale-force, non-tropical low pressure system centered a couple of

hundred miles north-northwest of the Madeira Islands continues to

produce a broad area of showers and thunderstorms well to the east

of the center. This low has changed little in organization over the

last 24 hours, and environmental conditions are expected to be only

marginally conducive for it to acquire subtropical characteristics

over the next day or so as it drifts southwestward. Afterwards,

Tips on preparing your home for a storm

  • Clear away any debris in your yard and bring any loose items such as patio furniture inside or anchor them securely

  • Trim trees

  • Repair any leaks or damaged areas of your roof

  • Clean your gutters and clear any drains

  • Prepare shutters or plywood to cover all windows

  • Prepare sandbags for use at entryways to help keep out potential floodwater

  • Clean out your freezer and refrigerator removing all perishable items. Turn the refrigerator on MAXIMUM COLD and open as little as possible

  • Close and secure all propane tanks

  • Fill your tub and other bottles with tap water for bathing and general use

The Saffir-Simpson Scale

The Saffir-Simpson Scale is the scale used to measure the intensity of hurricanes. It has 5 categories with a category 5 being the strongest and most destructive marked by sustained winds exceeding 157mph.

Saffir-Simpson Scale | Hurricane Season 2017

Category 1 - Sustained winds 74-95mph
Very dangerous winds will produce some damage: Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roof, shingles, vinyl siding and gutters. Large branches of trees will snap and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled. Extensive damage to power lines and poles likely will result in power outages that could last a few to several days.

Category 2 - Sustained winds 96-110mph
Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage: Well-constructed frame homes could sustain major roof and siding damage. Many shallowly rooted trees will be snapped or uprooted and block numerous roads. Near-total power loss is expected with outages that could last from several days to weeks.

Category 3 - Sustained winds 111-129mph
Devastating damage will occur: Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends. Many trees will be snapped or uprooted, blocking numerous roads. Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes.

Category 4 - Sustained winds 130-156mph
Catastrophic damage will occur: Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.

Category 5 - Sustained winds 157mph+
Catastrophic damage will occur: A high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.
